Four X Five

35mm and medium format film are a very familiar format for me, as I know the limitations and what to expect. Recently I took a trip up the California Coast tried my hand with a Graflex 4x5. I expected the camera to function similar to what I have already been shooting. Cameras are simple tools, with only 3 functions to juggle. ISO, shutter speed, and the f-stop. The Graflex lacks a light meter so you need to meter with a light meter. The Graflex back I have holds 12 - 4x5 frames. Its a process to get used to. My style of shooting is pretty spontaneous and quick so it can be a challenge with the new process...mixing up steps resulting in double exposures (actually great mistakes). Where I got in trouble was a deficient changing bag. A changing bag is what you use to replace the exposed film with the new film. The bag I was using had light leaks resulting in a fogged film. THAT SUCKS. I did not realize the bag had pinhole leaks all over the place...resulting in unwanted light streaks. The process is no simple task either. Sitting in pitch black for up to 35 minutes while developing crappy negatives is a real bummer. What's the moral of the story... not sure, but I still love the process and the challenge! Here are a couple pics from the foggy batch!
